Timeline

What follows is a suggested time-line for the especially serious student-athlete who desires to aggressively pursue college soccer. In these particular cases, the Junior year is really the critical one for the serious student-athlete. However, this is not the only way to achieve such a goal.

FRESHMAN YEAR
  • Establish a solid GPA foundation.
  • Work hard during the high school soccer season and speak with the coach to find out what you need to work on in order to further your development for next season.
  • Participate on a good premier club soccer team.
  • Have your club team go to top quality tournaments and showcases.
  • Participate in Olympic Development Program (ODP) with your state association.
SOPHOMORE YEAR
  • Take PSAT’s in order to familiarize yourself with the format of a College Board standardized test (e.g., SAT’s).
  • Student/Parent meeting with Advisor to set academic plan for remaining three years.
  • Continue working hard in the classroom to improve GPA.
  • Continue working hard on your premier club team, attending quality tournaments and showcases.
  • Begin to identify 7-10 college programs.
  • Meet with high school and club coach to evaluate your soccer development.
  • Obtain current Guide for the College Bound Athlete from NCAA.
  • Begin assembling a College Contact List.
JUNIOR YEAR
  • Student/Parent meeting with Director of College Counseling, Coach and/or Advisor to review progress.  Consider taking Advanced Placement classes.
  • Continue working hard in the classroom to improve GPA.
  • Attend all College Nights at high school and continue gathering information on potential schools.
  • Check with Director of College Counseling for SAT and/or ACT registration deadlines.  Take SAT and/or ACT tests.
  • Review with Director of College Counseling for re-test schedule. If necessary, take SAT and/or ACT tests again.
  • Research and gather financial aid information from Director of College Counseling.
  • Develop a preferred college list.
  • Complete College Counseling Student Questionnaire.
  • Get Soccer Letters of Recommendation/References.
  • Continue working hard on your premier club team, attending quality tournaments and showcases.
  • Begin writing to college coaches with a schedule of club games, tournaments, and showcases you will be attending. Note that while you can initiate contact with them, college coaches can only make contact after July 1 between your Junior & Senior year.
  • Arrange for spring/summer visits for preferred colleges.
  • Attend college soccer games, Division I, II, and III if possible.
  • Participate in Athletic Development Profile testing to further improve personal data for soccer portfolio.
  • Organize your student-athlete portfolio.
  • Register with NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse)at end of second semester.  See Director of College Counseling for Student Release Form.
SENIOR YEAR
  • College coaches can make contact after July 1 between your Junior & Senior year.
  • Finalize application essay topics and solicit review by Director of College Counseling and/or English teacher.
  • Student/Parent meeting with Director of College Counseling.  Ensure that AP examinations to be written in May are scheduled.
  • Update student-athlete portfolio.
  • Request referrals from teachers and coaches.
  • Arrange for official college visits & interviews.
  • Narrow list for admissions applications.
  • Apply to determined colleges for possible admissions and inform Director of College Counseling.
  • Get tax records to prepare financial aid forms.
  • January 1st file Financial Aid forms ASAP. This is often required in order to receive an athletic scholarship.
  • National Letter of Intent signing for college soccer begins February 1st (after 7:00am).
  • Review acceptances and offers - choose college you wish to attend.
  • Notify college you have chosen to attend and notify colleges accepted and not attending.
